Blackjack Glossary

Please refer to the below information to better understand blackjack terminology.

Action - How much you bet in a game

Advantage Player: Player who only bets when he has a mathematical edge.

Bankroll
- How much money you enter the table with

Basic Strategy
- Strategy used by all serious blackjack players to ensure they place the mathematical correct bets.

Blackjack
- Name of the game also referred to as 21 and Vingt et Un. Also this is a winning hand (ace and 10 or face
card) in the game and the most rewarded.

Bust
: When you lose by going over 21

Card Counting
: A strategy used to gain an advantage by keeping a record of what cards have been reduced and being able to determine the probability of the cards likely to be drawn next by what is left in the decks of cards being used.

Check
- Casino Chip

Chip
- This is what you bet with it represents a value of money

Comp points
- Awarded by the casino as you play as a reward for betting in their casino, can usually be redeemed for cash or chips.

Deal
- When the dealer gives you and the other players the cards

Dealer
- The one who gives the players the cards and who the players have to beat.

Deck
- The pack of playing cards used in the game.

Double Down
- The opportunity to double your bet by revealing one more card and then being forced to stand (only given when cards dealt appropriate)

Face Card
- Jack, Queen or King card

Flat Betting
- When a player always wagers the same amount of money on each bet

Gorilla
- Someone who bets big, often this can also be a player who doesn't know advance blackjack strategy

Hand
- The cards you have been dealt

Heads Up
- a game between one player and the dealer

Hit
- To request another card from the dealer

Hole Card
- This is the dealer's card you cannot see.

Insurance
- A side bet given when the dealer has an ace card to protect the player's potential losses

Multiple Deck
- A game where more than one pack of cards is used.

Push
- This is when you and the dealer tie on score, your stake is returned and you can bet again.

Split
- when two cards of the same type are dealt e.g. (4,4) a player is allowed to split these and play with two hands.

Surrender
- An option given if dealer has a great chance of winning, designed to minimise the player's loss.

Tie
- See push

Twenty One
- Different name for blackjack

Upcard
- the playing card that is face up and exposed
